Affiliates of Angelo, Gordon & Co., and Centrum Properties, Inc., purchased out of bankruptcy 24 acres of land and real estate within the Chicago CBD formerly owned by Montgomery Ward & Co. At the center of this site are two contiguous former office / warehouse buildings known simply as the South and North Catalog Buildings, which Amerimar Enterprises, Inc. and Taconic Investments were brought in to redevelop. The buildings were constructed in 1908 to serve as the hub for Montgomery Ward’s sprawling catalog distribution business. The high ceilings, extraordinary floor load capacity and expansive floorplates that made it an ideal distribution facility at the turn of the twentieth century also make it an ideal property to house the telecommunications infrastructure and technology-intensive office tenants at the dawn of the 21st century.
Encompassing over 2.0 million square feet, the North and South Catalog Buildings have been redeveloped as 600 W. Chicago, a mixed-use office building designed to serve the telecommunications and new media/information technology industries. 600 W. Chicago is now amongst the most technologically advanced buildings in downtown Chicago, providing tenants with extensive power capability, significant fiber connectivity, redundant power grids and back-up generators. 600 W. Chicago fulfills the increasing demand from telecommunications and other new media office tenants that are expanding rapidly in Chicago. Namely, it offers efficient, large floor plates (some as large as 146,000 square feet), space with state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems, heavy floor loading capacity (150-220 lb. live loads), high ceilings, and affordable rental rates in the dynamic River North district of downtown Chicago.
